Headaches, Migraines, and Chiropractic Care
We all get headaches--some of us rarely, some of us more often than what we think is "normal." For those who suffer, there are many things we can do to lessen the distress. Taking care of our bodies by eating right, exercising, drinking less caffeine and alcohol, stopping smoking, reducing stress, etc. can all alleviate symptoms. But beyond that? Yes, there is help! As far back as 1978 Dr JS Wight in the American Chiropractic Association's Journal of Chiropractic reviewed chiropractic treatments in conjunction with headaches, and found a "success rate between 72% and 90%. The benefits at times seemed to last for years after the treatments."
We also can consider that there are everyday headaches, tension headaches, and migraines. Luckily, all can be helped with chiropractic care. Regular headaches can often be treated same day and have a nearly immediate effect without drugs. Tension headaches feel like a band of pressure around the head, sometimes with nausea, but a constant pain (not throbbing like a migraine), and usually have tenderness around the head. Migraines are thought to be a neurological disease, having symptoms including intense, one-sided headaches, sensitivity to light or sound, and even nausea. All of these can usually be alleviated with chiropractic care, but not in every case. A trial by Dr Peter Tuchin at Macquarie University, showed that "60% of migraine sufferers had a reduction in their symptoms during the course of the treatment."
How does Chiropractors help?
A highly trained and skilled chiropractor safely puts the vertebrae in your neck and back (along the entire spine) into place so that nerves are no longer irritated or pinched and there is improved movement (called an adjustment). Dr Michael Kricken, a D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic) in Calgary, Canada says that most people's head pain seems to come from the joints and nerves in the upper neck, the muscles of the upper shoulder, and the muscles of the TM joint, which is in the jaw. Stress and tension in the muscles can cause a misalignment of the vertebrae. A chiropractor primarily adjusts the vertebrae, but also works with your muscles to get them to relax. This alignment allows the body to do the work of healing itself. It is a natural, drug-free option for the relief of pain and soreness.
According to Dr. Greg C. Molis in the magazine HeadWay, there are 3 different kinds of chiropractic care: relief, corrective, and maintenance. Relief care is when you have a lot of pain and discomfort, and the chiropractor does everything he or she can to make you more comfortable as quickly as possible. This often involves several visits over a 2-3 week period, but the number and frequency of visits depends on the amount of damage. Corrective care is for those who have a long history of spinal problems (often where they have avoided getting treatment when initally necessary), and takes place over weeks or months. Maintenance care is either for those with permanent spinal damage who need regular check-ups, or for those who, in an effort to avoid future problems, come in every 2-6 weeks for an adjustment. And according to a study done in Los Angeles, CA, "access to managed chiropractic care may reduce overall health care expenditures."
If you have legal residence in Norway (and therefore have either a D-number or person number) the Norwegian health system helps to pay for chiropractic treatment. There is a price reduction in the first 14 treatments in a calendar year, and since January 2006 this reduction (refusjon) is available without a doctor's referral. A chiropractor can also give referrals to X-Ray, MR, physiotherapist or specialist or hospital, as well as put you on sick leave from work.
